STOPit: New App May Help Schools Fight Cyberbullying

Bullying is hard to fight but cyberbullying can be even harder. With constant access to the internet, it’s not easy to escape a bully’s reach. But it looks like there’s a new app that could help kids and schools fight cyberbullying.

STOPit allows kids who are being cyberbullied to quickly and easily tell trusted adults and authorities that they are being cyberbullied and to seek help. The app comes with four features to support kids:

STOPit: Allows kids to take a screenshot of whatever material a cyberbully has sent them and forward it to trusted adults or authorities they feel can help them.

HELPit: Allows kids to text or call trusted adults and help centers designed to support kids.

FRIENDit: Allows kids to anonymously tell an adult when they think someone else is being cyberbullied and not telling anyone.

REPORTit: If a child feels that they are in immediate danger and need help, the REPORTit feature alerts the appropriate officials.

There are two ways of using this app. The first is to download it onto your child’s phone where they can choose who they want to contact in which situations. The other way is for your child’s school to partner with STOPit.

When a school partners with STOPit, the school is given an access code which they can distribute to their students. Students can then download the app from iTunes for free and enter the access code. This will automatically personalize the app for the access code’s associated school, including the contact information for authorities at the school, and their crisis center of choice.


STOPit launched in January 2014 and has already partnered with seven schools. Hopefully, we’ll see a downturn in cyberbullying as a result. The app is available on Apple devices and Android phones. To learn more, visit their site at http://stopitcyberbully.com/.

  • Mobile computing is quickly becoming involved in nearly every aspect of our lives. How we find directions, how we pay for goods, how we get our news, how we socially interconnect with others, and also as a verification of who we are, and nowhere is this more evident than in today’s high-tech colleges. Students and faculty are both using mobile smart phone and mobile computing applications around campus.

    They serve as virtual credit cards, and identification for getting into dorm rooms, cafeterias, and secured areas on campus. These are both safety features, and convenience factors. Also, businesses that cater to college students can use such virtual ID systems to allow the students to get into concerts, exhibits, and sporting events – sometimes free of charge, and other times their virtual ID system will bill their college account.
